On a roll now, went looking for something to sort out the cave where the antenna used to live and come across a pre-rolled over black steel rivet, with a flange that covers the entrance to the cave. Well bugger me, they were like cinderella's slippers!!! Then my workmate came over and asked what I was up to, I said about the missing feet and he replied, "like on a keyboard". Took a knob off one of the old machines control panel and low and behold, she fit snug as a bug in a rug. Not to be disheartened, I took it to work last night to see what I could do. Carrying on my search, I noticed the feet on the bottom of the scanner to prop it up at the front were missing. or lack of it, and the hole it lived in was counter-sunk roughly with a blade of some sort. So, after a couple of baby wipes and giving it a looking over, firstly noticing the missing tuner knob - spindle remaining (as described), then i noticed the tele whip. A coffee table? Well, at least I think it might have been a coffee table for a period of its life. Well my 2042 arrived yesterday It took about 5mins to get through all the packaging and when I finally got in. There is still nothing that comes close to it's capabilities for controlling an Optocom, 2042/535 or PCR1000. That aside it is by far the best piece of searching and logging software that has been released to the hobby market. When it (or a 2042/Opto535) is used with Probe software you have pretty much the best hobby computer aided monitoring base you can get. The Optocom (never retailed in the UK) was essentially a 2042 with computer interface built in. Neither have the bells and whistles that are so popular (though rarely utilised or necessary) these days. The receive performance of both is fairly similar. Be aware though that with both of these models the most significant modification was to add computer control but in both cases the things to do that are no longer available. Both can be tweaked but is it really worth the time/money doing so? If you do decide you want to mess with either then you'll want to get hold of "Cheek3 The Ultimate Scanner".
